the evolution of television watching. from privilege to the rich, and the simple, and the live only, the event watching, the serial, tuning in next week, same channel, same time, the schedule, making room in it, but at most watched with family, amongst friends. maybe a discussion at the water cooler the next day. then the move to VCR, possibly, but TiVo and DVRs and time shifting changed the game, and that's been recent. but it's different, watching television, being able to fast forward through and by commercials, not being constrained, chained to the house, or a television, that other real life events and activities can take precedence, and you can just record things for when nothing else is going on. so things are no longer live. but then social networks rise to the fore. And now television watching moves away from on my own time, to something shared, again, except not limited by space. You don't have to be in the same room to discuss what just happened in the game, but it's better to experience together, with commentary, than to watch alone, trying to avoid any spoilery discussions until you can play it. And I wonder what the next step is. Timeshifted watching with social networking? Or something else entirely?
